Dave Lackie is at it again, beauty expert and author of Beauty Departure magazine hosted a Bvlgari fragrance launch overlooking the city of Toronto this week. His loyal Twitter followers flooded into a beautifully set up event space on top of the Hudson’s Bay building in the Arcadian Court. The sun was setting over city hall and cast a warm glow over the stunning perfume bottles on display, Goldea The Roman Night- Absolute for her and Man- Wood Essence for him. They were begging to be photographed. Many bottles were presented under glass over a large communal table covered in succulents, flowers and plums. The plums and plants were a nod to ingredients used in the fall fragrances, which I thought was such attention to detail. Overhead, greenery and branches hung over the diners, little flickering candles dangled from vines in glass cases, which was perhaps a reference to the men’s cologne Wood Essence, with more of a woodsy-citrus scent. I told Dave it looked like a wedding reception; maybe one of his best set up’s yet, he agreed and told me his team had been putting the display together for 5 hours. Bvlgari is associated with the best of the best (just think of any piece of their jewelry!) so I wasn’t all that surprised when I walked into a chic wooded wonderland. The brain behind these unique scents is master perfumer Alberto Morillas, he’s been hailed as one of the very best perfumers in the world. Goldea’s The Roman Night, a sexy date night scent, has notes of rose, peony, jasmine and black plums. I prefer to lean towards deep floral scents in perfumes and loved how subtle, romantic and feminine it smelled. I could picture myself using it before a night on the town or even adding a spritz or two to pillow cases on a night in (hey now!). The men’s cologne had more of a citrus zest to it, with notes of coriander. I thought it smelled clean (think fresh out of the shower) and even somewhat refreshing. It’s very sexy/sensual in my opinion and can see why Bvlgari chose Canadian model (and babe) Nick Bateman to be the face of it. I think a scent like this would make a wonderful and personal gift for that special man in your life. I was lucky enough to walk away with a bottle for my husband! The always impressive O&B catered the 3 course dinner for Dave and his followers. We enjoyed a Boston bibb and strawberry salad, thyme and garlic seared chicken breast and a beautifully presented plum tart with citrus gelato (noticing a theme around the fragrances with the plums and citrus in the dessert? So fun! ) At these events, I’ve come to make some really good friends. I always see some friendly familiar faces and it even sort of feels like we’re getting together for a family dinner. People catch up; we have fun talking about the new products Dave is showing us and look forward to each other’s write ups or photos of the event. There is always such a fun buzz around these dinners; we’re all so genuinely excited to be around Dave and his guests. His online community must have felt the same way because his hashtag #BvlgariElegance trended number 3 in Canada. During dessert a Q&A began with Bvlgari ambassador Melanie Caplan and Dave. Stories about the attention to detail in jewelry and the amount of work that goes into these pieces was impressive, Caplan went on to say “The feel and the touch is something that’s very integral to the brand today because even to this day Paolo Bulgari, when creating the jewelry, Dan was telling me this story that he closes his eyes and he touches the stones because it’s all about the feel and the touch. Everything has to be soft and silky on a woman’s skin, so when a woman is wearing a piece of Bvlgari jewellery it has to feel like it fits on her skin, there are no hard edges. Everything is soft and smooth.” If that doesn’t make you feel like you’re wearing jewels fit for a queen, then I don’t know what would! Elizabeth Taylor was such a fan of Bvlgari’s designs that rumour had it she would only show up to set on time if she had a piece waiting for her in her dressing room. “It was told that the only Italian she could actually speak was Bvlgari!”Caplan laughed. Dave added “You know what’s true story? For directors to get her on set, to show up on time because she’s notoriously late, if a film director wanted her to arrive on time he or she had to have a piece of Bvlgari, a gift waiting for her on the set and she would actually show up on time and she would shriek with glee and open up the box” Is there a way to get my work to do this!? Dave also brought up a trend women seem to be leaning towards for fall. Turns out, he is often asked what ‘woody’ fragrance he would recommend to women, plenty of them are even opting for cologne instead of perfume this time of year. “We have seen and heard from many of you tonight that many of you who tried the Wood Essence said ‘I would wear this myself’, so that is a component to the fragrance that , I don’t know if that was intentional but we can see just from the group that is here tonight that that definitely has an appeal” explained Caplan. The brand ambassador also had an idea as to why the woodsy scents were so popular with both sexes “The inspiration came from the need to disconnect to reconnect. 54% of the world’s population live in an urban environment and have a desire to disconnect in that environment, and we see it in the amount of greenery that is in our urban cities, everybody is looking to put beautiful plants on their balconies, their working environment, people want to be surrounded by the woods, the earth of nature and greenery, it makes us feel good, so that was the inspiration.” This made so much sense to me, as when I need to feel rested and rejuvenated I’ll try to have a weekend getaway to a cottage or the woods or even go on a hike. There is just something about being out in nature that calms us, which is why we may be subconsciously drawn to the fresh earthy or woody scent. I’m always learning something new like that from Dave’s events. He always makes sure to say how lucky he feels that he’s been able to meet so many new people and friends from social media, but I think we’re the lucky ones! I’m always so grateful for an invite to one of these world class parties and am so happy to have gotten to know Dave. If you aren’t already following him, it’s a must do for any beauty and fashion enthusiast. He’s on Twitter and Instagram under @DaveLackie and he’s so interactive with his fans.
