Do you like live theatre? Ridiculous zombie movies? How about a mix of both? That’s exactly what The Secret Sessions brings to the table with their Movie Experiences. Their most recent experience is based on the Shaun of the Dead movie (One of my personal zombie favourites!). They’ve transformed the Monarch Tavern into the Winchester Pub from the 2004 comedy horror flick. They have main characters from the movie walk around the pub to interact with some audience member before the show starts. I believe they were well cast; a lot of them really resembled the characters from the movie. Unfortunately for us, zombies were a part of that cast as well and soon, my buddy Chris and I were ‘bitten’. “You have to go to the hospital!” one of the zombies grunted at us. We were lead behind a curtain where two makeup artists applied make up to zombify us. We walked back into the crowd looking a little less lively and a bit more bloody. (Which later made for an extremely awkward Uber ride home. ‘Are you a clown?’ my driver asked.)
We enjoyed some pub snacks in our new costumes that were included in the purchase of the ticket. Fries, pork buns, and chicken skewers were just a few of the options we sampled. Soon after grabbing a drink, another pork bun and having some characters ask to take photos of us on their 2004 flip phone, we heard a loud conversation starting to take place. It was Shaun having a date with his girlfriend Liz who openly complained about always having to go to The Winchester. The crowd started to form around, curious. Shaun was going to make it up to her, book that nice restaurant she’s wanted to try; he would take care of it. ‘Presentation downstairs!’ a lady in a ripped bloodied shirt announced. We all shuffled downstairs where a makeshift theatre had been set up. We grabbed a seat when the opening minutes of Shaun of the Dead began to play. After a few minutes of the film, the lights went up to show Shaun and Pete on the couch of their flat playing video games- unaware that a zombie invasion is slowly taking over London. Their flat mate complains of being mugged last night and having one of the thugs ‘bite him’ on the hand. Weird, right? I wonder how this plays out. (We ALL know how this plays out) The play goes on like this for the rest of the night, some of the movie is shown and then live theatre takes place in the pub. It was campy fun. Zombies were banging on the windows of the pub, gun shots ring out, and there might have even been a disembowelment on stage. (You’ll have to go to find out!) Tickets are $60 a person (Learn more at www.thesecretsessions.ca) and you’re encouraged to come dressed in 2004 fashions or as a zombie. Also, feel free to do your best British accent to fit in with Shaun and his mates. Hurry though, show is on from October 25-28th! There will be enough BRAAAAAINSSS for everyone! Until Next Event! X
